What is REIKI?

“Reiki" (ray - key) is a Japanese word meaning "universal life energy," the energy found in all things. The Usui System of Reiki Healing, or Usui Shiki Ryoho, applies this energy through gentle touch for the purpose of healing.
Among the many thousands of Reiki students all over the world, most will agree that "universal life energy" is only a minimal description of Reiki's extraordinary force. In her early diary, Hawayo Takata, the woman who brought the Usui System of Reiki out of Japan, stated, "This power (Reiki) is unfathomable, immeasurable, and being a universal life force, it is incomprehensible to man.

What Is Reiki Supposed To Do?

A Reiki treatment supports the whole person — physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
When a Reiki practitioner places his/her hands on a client's clothed body, Reiki flows through the practitioner into the client. This transfer may be felt as any type of sensation—heat, cold, vibration, tingling, unusual heaviness, or sometimes as no sensation at all. A full Reiki treatment takes about 60
Reiki has specifically been documented to relax muscles, still the mind, and ease pain. Hands-on treatment has been scientifically proven to accelerate healing. Many health professionals are effectively incorporating the use of Reiki into their individual practices.

On the physical level, Reiki can bring relaxation to stressed muscles, decrease pain, accelerate the healing time of bones and wounds, diminish the tissue involvement of burns and bruises, and much more.

On a mental and emotional level, anxiety is reduced, a sense of well-being is increased and another level of relaxation can be felt. At this degree of deep relaxation, a rebalancing of energies can occur and the natural healing ability of the body is enhanced.

On a spiritual level, people have stated they feel revitalized and newly awakened after a full-body session.

Precepts for Daily Living

Five spiritual precepts have been handed down from Mikao Usui as a part of the oral tradition of the Usui System.

Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to every living thing.

You can find it like this

Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Show Gratitude
Be diligent in all undertaking
Be kind to everyone

The precepts remind us to be as conscious as possible, letting go of worry and anger, learning to honor and cultivate appreciation. The Usui System is not a religion. The precepts are there for practitioners of all religions to remind us of the same basic moral principles most of us learned as children: "Treat others as you would want them to treat you." They call upon us to return to the pure teachings of our own religious up bringing. They are a call for developing inner peace and a call for unity among diverse people. The precepts can unite us in peaceful brotherhood and sisterhood, first by calming our minds of worry and anger, then by treating others respectfully and cultivating appreciation for all our good fortune.
The precepts remind us that all of life is sacred. They make manifest the essence of Reiki in daily life and relationship.

Spiritual Lineage

The origins of Reiki could be said to be as old as human kind. Throughout human history there have been those who were known for their healing touch. This is something that we know little about and consider a gift. The particular form of this gift that we know of as the Usui System of Reiki Healing has its origins in the person of Mikao Usui, a Japanese gentleman who lived in the late 1800's and died in 1926.
As a teacher, he was challenged by his students about his unwavering faith in the reality of a healing force. It became his personal quest to be able to source this power as a help to mankind. Through years of scholarship, studying sacred scriptures of Christian and Buddhist origins, as well as living a life of personal prayer and meditation, Mikao Usui experienced a spiritual awakening or spiritual transmission that resulted in the creation of the system of healing we have received.
What we know has been passed on to us through a series of lineage bearers who have been guardians and preservers of the integrity of the practice. Chujiro Hayashi, a successor of Mikao Usui, practiced and taught in a clinical setting in Tokyo, Japan. It was to this clinic that a young Japanese-American, Hawayo Takata, was brought in 1932. Reiki healed her of the illnesses that had brought her to Japan. As a result of her healing she stayed in Japan for a year of training and practice in Usui Shiki Ryoho, the Usui System of Reiki Healing.
In 1937, Hawayo Takata became a Reiki Master in Usui Shiki Ryoho, a person empowered to teach Reiki to others. In that same year and for the first time, the Usui System of Reiki Healing was taught outside of Japan by Takata's teacher, Chujiro Hayashi. Mrs. Takata was chosen as Dr. Hayashi's successor and brought Reiki to the West.
Before her death in 1980, Mrs. Takata chose as her successor her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto. Phyllis has spent the last 20 years sharing her understanding of the Usui System of Reiki with students and masters throughout the world. She is assisted in her work by Paul Mitchell.
